Women in red stockings! We meet at half past one!
So the summon sounded on the radio on the 1st of May 1970, the day the Red Stockings marched down the main street, right behind the workers unions, carrying a large statue of Venus. Little did they know how long and eventful that journey would turn out to be.
The Red Stocking´s fight for equality, the right of women owning their own body and their freedom to be humans - not products had just begun. They were called ugly, masculine, hairy and sexless. They were daubed man haters, communists and female chauvinists.
- but what is their story?
In this unusual and entertaining documentary sixteen Red Stockings tell us the story of one of the most controversial movement in Icelandic history. Through interviews, animation, graphics and music we get a rare peak into events that would result in other movements and a battle that has still not been resolved. Or has it?
Halla Kristín Einarsdóttir was born in Reykjavik, Iceland in 1975. She is currently working with respectable documentary films but has a shady past in underground shorts and art video. She has worked in film and television since 2004.
